Australian Brands
Horses branded before 1988 will carry a single line brand. Those branded more recently will have a 2 line brand with the first figure being an S (ie: Standardbred), which was incorporated as apart of the freebrand as of 1/8/87. In addition, the last two digits of the year of foaling have now been included.
The freezebrand which is usually found on the off side of the horses neck is read from left to right.
Australian freezebrands use the "alpha angle" systems - with two lines of four symbols each and can be read as follows:

State ID No's
New Zealand Brands
New Zealand brands consist of 2 lines, the top consisting of 3 symbols (including the letter Z to denote the country of origin - being New Zealand) and the other 2 to denote the year of birth. The bottom line is a 4 symbol number.

Now What?
Once the details of the brand have been noted, head to http://www.harness.org.au/index.cfm?p=f&id=/ausbreed/reports/ahrconline.htm enter in your horses freezebrand and it will bring up all your horses history. Including breeder, racing history (including where and who drove) and prize money where applicable. If your horse's details don't come up, it may mean that he hadn't infact raced. If no name comes up, it means that despite being foal recorded your horse was never offically named and again, would have never raced. When looking at the birth date, you may notice that the date is dated September 1. Unlike TB's where the generic birthdate is August 1st (as in most societies) the STB is September 1 and ultimately while sometimes the dates are correct most are generally defaulted to this date. To find out your horses exact birthdate just pop us an email or ask any friends that may be a trainer and as will have the access to look up this information on your behalf.
